Songs No Longer

Today I tried to write a song
Why did it take me so long
It moved in me some more
Isn't this what life's for

But the words on the paper
Didn't fit the music in my mind
And I didn't know what to do
So I let go just to find
The music was good and I surprised myself
I took down all the books I had placed on the shelf

All those years ago when my songs all dried up
And I thought that was it
My cathartic years over
I put away my things
But always the girl sings

So I'm hopeful tonight
That I've opened the door
Just a crack, just enough
To get back on the floor

I have faith that inside
There are words which are moving
And music and rhythm
Once more I am grooving

To songs that I sing
And to music I write
To catharsis again
I am lighting the light

Things keep on changing
They are all different now
If you take a look back
I wonder just how
Much different from when
You were, forty, thirty, twenty or ten
Now fifty years past
Who knows what will be
Something crazy and wild
Or maybe just free
You are a sweet, scented rose
In the June summer sun
This rhyme is for you
And this day is the one
When all your friends
Will come to Bath
To sit in the park
To party and laugh
And to toast to your birthday
We’ll drink and be merry
Be thankful for small things
Like you’re too young for sherry

I wish you big love
And also much laughter
As your heart comes to rest
In the happy-ever-after
And in many years to come
When you look back again
You will marvel as you remember
Wow I was only fifty then
